This afternoon, Oldham and Rochdale play a very special friendly in memory of Ernie Cooksey.   We’ll also be supporting Melanoma UK who helped Ernie through his illness.

The club will me making announcements through the day on the PA system and we’ll be sharing a number of messages through our social media channels this afternoon, but we’d ask you take a read of them below if you don’t do social media.

  • Melanoma is the 5th most common cancer in the UK.
  • 7 people die of melanoma every day.
  • Men tend to ignore any skin problems and this means if they are diagnosed, they do less well in treatment.
  • A number of sporting personalities have been diagnosed with melanoma, including Paul Merson and Vinnie Jones.  And as we know, our very own Ernie Cooksey, who sadly passed away in 2008, a few months after Celtic’s Tommy Burns.
  • Skin checks are vital – use pay day as a way of remembering to check your skin.  ‘Pay cheque, skin check”.
  • Never allow your skin to burn, and never use sunbeds.
  • Use high factor sunscreen, apply frequently and the right quantity.  An average body needs a full shot glass.
  • If you have to be outdoors in the midday sun – cover up well, hats, long sleeves, good quality sunglasses.

For more information, you can visit the Melanoma UK website.   If you’re coming to the game, enjoy and bring waterproofs!
